Blanky by Kealan Patrick Burke

“You say you can’t imagine what it must be like to lose a child. Let me make it easy for you. It’s the beginning of the end of your world”

In the wake of his infant daughter’s tragic death, Steve Brannigan is struggling to keep himself together. Estranged from his wife, who refuses to be inside the house where the unthinkable happened, and unable to work, he seeks solace in an endless parade of old sitcoms and a bottle of bourbon.

Until one night he hears a sound from his daughter’s old room, a room now stripped bare of anything that identified it as hers…except for her security blanket, affectionately known as Blanky.

Boy, what a sweat fest this little read is! In so many ways. The heartwrenching emotion of one family’s horror story that opens the narrative, the churning apprehension of what the outcome might be for the family, the unshakable fear that things can and will get worse. It has all the feels and then some.

If you like short, twisty and chilling you will love this story! It doesn’t disappoint on any front. My only gripe, if you call it that, is that I felt it could have gone on a little longer but that speaks more of my emotional attachment to the characters, and not wanting the book to end, than any failing on Burke’s part.

Dark forces, an unexplained presence, creepy dolls with baby fingers for eyes, yes “baby fingers”, this was an awesome Halloween read that is as creepy as the season itself.

This was my first Kealan Patrick Burke read and it will most certainly not be the last!
